Our History

In 1995, following the call of the Holy Spirit, Pastor I.D. Williams began a home Bible study at 8517 Innsdale Lane, San Diego, CA. This small gathering was the foundation for what would soon become Greater Mount Moriah Baptist Church. Inspired by God’s message from Genesis 12:1, Pastor Williams continued to lead the study until March 7, 1995, when God opened the doors to the Encanto Recreation Center at 6555 Broadway Avenue, where the first morning worship services were held. After three months, the Greater Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church was officially established on June 2, 1995, under the guidance of the Progressive Baptist District Association and the late Dr. R.C. Williams, Sr. With much prayer and dedication, Pastor Williams sought a permanent place for worship. On August 20, 1995, the congregation moved to 4945 El Cajon Blvd. As the church grew, so did the need for more space, and in September 1996, they relocated just two doors down to 4935 El Cajon Blvd. In March 2000, the church moved to a new location at 4189 Estrella Ave., where they remained until January 2003 when the property was purchased for redevelopment. During the search for a new home, the congregation temporarily worshipped at the Super 8 motel conference room on Alvarado Canyon Rd., while weekly ministry meetings took place at Pastor Williams' home. After much prayer, God blessed the church with a new facility at 5925-A El Cajon Blvd., where the first service was held on February 2, 2003. The congregation worshipped at this location for over 13 years, until May 2016. In His divine timing, God provided a new opportunity, and on June 5, 2016, the church moved to its current home at 5847 El Cajon Blvd., a milestone that coincided with Pastor Williams’ birthday. On New Year’s Day 2017, Community of Praise Baptist Church, led by Pastor L.E. Sharp, joined with Greater Mount Moriah, uniting as one body in Christ. Recently, God revealed His desire for the church to be known as "The Mount Church." This change reflects God’s divine intervention, as Pastor Williams had previously named various rooms in the church after biblical mountains such as Mount Carmel, Mount Sinai, and Mount Moriah. Throughout the years, The Mount Church has been a source of blessings, providing spiritual guidance, feeding the hungry, supporting the homeless, and transforming lives. As the church continues its mission of Kingdom Building, the congregation remains faithful, trusting God’s plan and praying for continued growth. Pastor Williams often reminds the church, "Without a vision, the people will perish," and through praise and worship, they continue to stand strong on God’s promises. As the church moves forward, they hold onto the belief that “When praises go up, blessings come down,” and that “If God can get a blessing through you, then He will send one to you.”

What We Believe

At The Mount, we believe the Bible is the inspired, inerrant, and authoritative Word of God, serving as our ultimate guide. We uphold the Trinity, acknowledging one God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe in the full deity and humanity of Jesus Christ, His sinless life, atoning death, and future return. The Holy Spirit convicts regenerates and empowers believers. Humanity, created in God's image, is fallen and in need of salvation, which comes through faith in Jesus alone. As Christ's body, the Church is called to worship, fellowship, and fulfill the Great Commission. We also affirm the future bodily return of Christ and the final judgment.

Core Values

At The Mount, our core values are grounded in a deep commitment to Biblical Authority, where we recognize God's Word as the ultimate guide for all aspects of life, both individually and as a community. We embrace Sacrificial Reality, offering our time, talents, and resources in worship and service, understanding that everything we have is a gift from God. Through communal maturity, we nurture spiritual growth by equipping families, fostering strong biblical relationships, and working together to advance the gospel. Finally, as a Missional Community, we are dedicated to living out our faith daily, shining the light of Jesus through acts of service and sharing truth for the glory of God.
